There's a wall that features prominently in the second half of Tortilla Curtain, the world premiere play by Matthew Spangler currently being staged as the sixth and final production of San Diego REP's 36th season. To create dramatic conflict, Boyle pits different aspects of the California Dream against one another. The major theme that occurs in both novels was depression. Boyle book, 'The Inner Circle' previously and since I quite enjoyed it, was happy to try another when my daughter recommended it. It seemed to be a good way to conclude. I spent a lot of time wondering what the author was trying to convey with this book. I guess people no longer use the phrase 'tortilla curtain' when referring to the invisible barrier that separates us from our neighbors to the South. After reading this book, I went to Goodreads and read the reviews. We finished the California Culture class with T.C. Boyle does this admirably in his novel, The Tortilla Curtain. Even those sympathetic to our melting pot heritage have T.C. Boyle and grapes of anger by john Steinbach both possess kindred thematic elements. This analysis is one of my favorites so far. I wasn't quite sure about it when I first thought of the idea because I didn't think that I could clearly draw the connection.
